The guiding principle behind my approach to teaching is that to understand mathematics or statistics, it is necessary to do mathematics or statistics.
Although no two students needs are identical and there is wide latitude in how my students and I work toward their goals, I typically meet my students once a week for each course that I am working with them in. These hour long standing sessions are scheduled a day prior to homework due dates or quiz dates, depending how the course is structured, to assure that they can do their homework assignments or are prepared for their quizzes. Additional sessions are often scheduled at exam times.
I expect my students to have made a good faith effort at their assigned or suggested problems before our meetings. At our meetings, I clarify concepts as needed, I go over the work that they have attempted on their own and where they have stumbled I guide my students through the process of the task at hand, whether it is problem solving, proof construction and writing, or statistical analysis.
